Non-technology Based Activities to Support AAC

Here are some tips for using your AAC device at home.

1. Give your child choices for snacks and meals. Open up the page that has food options. Ask your child what he/she wants.

2. Give your child only 1-2 pieces of the snack/food item. Have your child request more by pressing the picture for that food item. (i.e. If he requests chips, give him 2-3. Then, make him press the button for “chips” again to get 2-3 more.)

3. Read a book to your child (example: a book about animals). Open up a page that might go along with the book (i.e. animal page). Ask questions (i.e. What animal is this? What animal says “moo”? What animal is eating the carrot?).

4. Practice colors. Hold up items of different colors. Have your child match the color on the color page.

5. Practice spelling his/her name on the keyboard page.

6. Practice labeling family members using the family page. Who is this? (i.e. mom, dad)

7. Practice identifying clothing items using the clothing page.

8. Practice labeling body parts using the body parts page.

9. Requesting items. Put a clear container full of your child’s favorite toys in sight (closed). Open up the toy (or “I want”) page. Ask your child what he/she wants. You can put one toy or multiple toys in the container.

10. Requesting items. Hold up two of your child’s favorite toys/movies/food. Ask your child which one they want. Make sure to have page open so your child can make a choice using their device.

**Remember: It is okay to help your child push the buttons in the beginning. He/She is still learning to use the device. Always say the words to encourage speaking as well (but don’t require them to say the word). As long as they push the button (even if it is with physical assistance), give them the item they request as quickly as possible.
