Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to the various tools and strategies which can be used to communicate without vocal chords. These tools and strategies enable Non-Speakers and Partial Speakers to express themselves effectively, but AAC is also used by most people at some point (e.g., writing, typing, gesturing).
Interdisciplinary research conducted by Lackey et.al at Queen's University (2023) explored the barriers encountered by individuals using AAC in workplace settings. The aim of the study was to identify these barriers comprehensively and propose recommendations to enhance AAC accessibility and utilization in professional environments. Understanding these challenges is crucial for promoting inclusivity and ensuring equal opportunities for all employees. This is a brief summary of the findings:
Lack of awareness among colleagues and supervisors about AAC devices and their functionalities.
Limited training opportunities for both AAC users and their coworkers on how to effectively use and support AAC technology.
Inaccessible workplace environments that hinder the use of AAC devices (e.g., lack of adjustable desks, poor acoustics).
Attitudinal barriers such as stigma or misconceptions about AAC users' capabilities and communication needs.
Financial constraints preventing access to advanced AAC technology or necessary adaptations in the workplace.
Conduct regular awareness sessions and training programs for all employees on AAC devices and communication strategies.
Ensure workplace environments are physically accessible for AAC users by providing adjustable furniture, adequate lighting, and noise-reducing measures.

This study provided a comprehensive overview of the barriers faced by AAC users in workplace settings, emphasizing the importance of awareness, training, and accessible environments. By addressing these barriers and implementing recommended strategies, organizations can create more inclusive workplaces where AAC users can fully participate and contribute.
Cost. To begin using an AAC tool such as Proloquo2Go, a user would require an iPad ($799) and the downloaded App ($349.99). Individuals that do not receive funding for the device may be prevented access due to lack of funds to pay for the technology.
Diagnosis requirement. Geography may be a barrier to receiving a diagnosis. Funding for AAC technology usually provided to individuals with a diagnosis.
Training. Families and educators require training to use the technology effectively.
Approval process. The process of approval often requires the family to prove an individual needs AAC before they can get access to equipment (example: school referrals, grants and ministry funding). The approval process may delay the availability of the AAC device.
Language and Cultural Barriers. Proloquo2Go offers four language options, English, French, Spanish and Dutch. Individuals using a language other than the four listed will have to learn a new language before the technology can be used.
Policy and Legislation. Lack of policy and outdated legislation may be a barrier to access.
