1. Model the process of segmenting the phonemes in a word, while moving one bead for each sound. Move the beads by advancing to the next slide.

2. Guide the student(s) in segmenting and counting the phonemes in a word.  

3. Move one bead for each sound the student says.

4. If the student is able, you can provide remote access for the student to control the movement with the arrow keys.

Elkonin boxes are a great way to develop phonemic awareness, focusing specifically on phonemic segmentation practice.  Students count the sounds in each word first, and then they move a chip into each box to represent each sound. 

Race against the clock to see how quickly you can finish this game. Click the start button and choose a word set and difficulty level. To play, read the word in the cloud at the top of the screen and look at the picture cards moving along the bottom of the screen from right to left. Fish for the correct card by clicking the top of the picture that matches the word in the cloud. If you are correct, the cloud shows a new word. The timer stops when you finish matching all the cards. 

When children can successfully segment simple words, they break it into beginning, middle and ending sounds. Help learners master breaking words apart with the ending sound game.

Record students verbally segmenting the CVC words for assessment. You can create your own flip to input different words and save them to reference the learner's abilities and needs.
