What can I expect from EDST courses?

Whether you're coming from high school or college, university courses tend to require more work and more time investment.
EDST courses involve:
Up to 90 minutes of synchronous class time ("tutorials")
Approximately 2 hours of asynchronous work in preparation for tutorial, to:
Introduce new content needed for tutorial and assignments
Engage in active work with course concepts
Between 1 - 7+ hours of homework and/or work on assignments.
In total, you can expect to spend between four and ten hours per week, per course.
What about courses from other faculties? (Four-Year Students)
What about courses from other faculties? (Four-Year Students)
If you are in the four-year program, some of your electives must be completed in other faculties. These courses may have different structures and expectations. For example:
Non-EDST courses may have both a lecture and a tutorial that you must attend.
Non-EDST courses may have a midterm and/or final exam.
Non-EDST courses may take place exclusively on-campus (and may be on our North Campus, requiring extra commute time).
Be sure to review the information in the registration system, or book an appointment with your Academic Advisor for assistance choosing courses that work best for your goals and context!

Once you're logged into Canvas, click on Courses or Dashboard in the left sidebar.
Courses view will pop out on top of the page you're currently viewing, showing a minimal list of all of your currently registered courses. This includes:
The course name
A Canvas course code
A link to access all current and previous courses
Dashboard view will take you to a separate page providing a visual overview of all of your currently registered courses. This will include:
A cover image (if set) or colour
The course name
A Canvas course code
Clicking on the desired course in either view will take you to the course homepage, where you can access your course outline, assignments, discussion boards, and more!

Every course at Ontario Tech will come with a course outline (a.k.a., syllabus) which acts as the contract and roadmap for the course.
Many instructors will dedicate a portion of class time to reviewing and/or answering questions about the syllabus early in the course, but it is the student's responsibility to review and be familiar with its content.
Every EDST syllabus will contain:

Information about where and when to attend class
The course description and learning outcomes
Contact information for the instructor (and TA, if applicable)
Information about how the course will run and expectations for your participation
A week-by-week overview of the course content
An overview of the assignments, deadlines, and related policies (e.g., what to do if you might have trouble submitting an assignment on time, expectations for group work, academic integrity policies, etc.)
An overview of the supports and policies relevant to your overall studies at the university
Course outlines will be uploaded to Canvas in the week before classes begin. Be sure to review your course outlines at the start of term and refer back to them often! If anything is unclear, don't hesitate to ask your instructor!
