In the Classroom

With canva's powerful design tools, both teachers and students can take advantage of new modes of expression. A teacher could use canva to create posters or infographics to catch student attention and direct it toward important information. Likewise students can use these design tools to express their artistic sides during projects. This provides teachers with the opportunity to offer alternative assignments which play to each students' strengths; offering the choice between a written reflection, a video response, an in class presentation, or an informative graphic from canva.

Research Connection

Creative students often feel constrained by well-structured and highly-ordered learning, and moreover often self-select visual design tasks when presented with the option (Rosar, 2022). In order to better serve all students in a class, the students must be given the opportunity to find the ways they express themselves best. Indeed, in the hands of an engaged and motivated student we see the student themselves elevate the task from a transformative one into enhancement state (as per the SAMR model) of their own volition.
