Play-Based Learning
At Bright Beginnings, we uphold the principles of the Waldorf method (Cohen & Bresnihan, 2018), which strongly emphasizes imaginative play, artistic expression, music, storytelling, authentic handwork, and embracing the natural rhythms of both the seasons and life itself. We believe children learn and grow through play; therefore, our schedule is carefully designed to incorporate various enriching activities to foster their development. Previously perceived as blank slates, children are inherently capable and interested, eagerly ready to explore and absorb knowledge through play (Ontario Science Centre, 2017).
Examples of activities that align with our beliefs on imaginative play, artistic expression, music, storytelling, authentic handwork, and embracing natural rhythms include:
Imaginative Play: Providing wooden blocks, dolls, and dress-up clothes encourages children to create imaginative worlds and scenarios.
Artistic Expression: Offering painting, drawing, and creating opportunities with Play-Doh and other creative arts to allow children to express themselves visually and explore different mediums.
Music: Incorporating singing, rhythmic movement, and exposure to various musical instruments to stimulate auditory senses and foster a love for music.
Storytelling: Sharing oral stories, fairy tales, and fables to ignite children's imaginations, develop language skills, and instill moral values.
Authentic Handwork: Introducing activities such as loom knitting, sewing with yarn, and practicing scissor cutting to promote fine motor skills, patience, and a sense of accomplishment through creating tangible objects.
Embracing Natural Rhythms: Organizing activities and celebrations that align with seasonal changes, such as planting seeds in spring, harvesting fruits in summer, and celebrating festivals that mark significant moments in nature's cycle.
