At NLC, we utilize the Zones of Regulation in order to work with students on identifying their feelings. Students identify that they are in the blue, green, yellow or red zone based on how they are feeling. We reinforce that all zones and feelings are okay to have and discuss various coping skills to use in order to reach the green zone in which they feel great and are ready to learn.
"What zone are you in?" is a question that we ask students as a prompt to identify how they are feeling. If they can identify and share how they are feeling, staff can then prompt them to engage in appropriate coping skills. Students could also identify what skills they might need to use to get to or remain in the green zone.
Here are some examples of coping skills that students could use to remain in or get to the green zone.
