GLOBAL COMMUNITY PARTNERS -
GETTING INVOLVED
GETTING INVOLVED
Advocacy can be used as service if you are educating about a global issue and offering ways to fight the issue. There are four types:
ASAP: A (Awareness) S (Service) A (Advocacy) and/or P (Philanthropy)
Other ideas:
Water Walk ( Thirst Project is recommended by other schools) Team up with the local public library to increase publicity and participation. Many non profit groups have continued either "bike rides" or their "run walk" by encouraging people to do the walk on their own and then send in pledge money for the organization. Participants could also be encouraged to take a picture and share it on social media linking back to your service project and the organization you may be working with. Compile educational materials (videos, infographics, etc) to teach about the issue.
Virtual Learning Event A student planned a virtual learning event focused on a global issue with pre-reading, viewing or listening assignments, guest speakers, Q&A, student discussion, and reflections on learning.
Research to Share with Peers and Adults Research papers with research-based oral presentations of different perspectives from around the world with a focus on the economy, environment, education, healthcare, elections, agriculture, war, race, public policy, or other topics of student interest.
Research to Share with Children, Community, or Organization Research a social issue, creating infographics to communicate key ideas/information, and making print and/or audio public service announcements to inform and inspire action to improve conditions for a genuine need (i.e. brochures/posters for a public health initiative encouraging vaccinations, mosquito nets, etc.) These can then be sent to a specific organization. Alternatively, create a story-board or children’s book on the topic.
Letters of Advocacy Write letters of advocacy and create awareness campaigns. 1 hour (of service hours) for writing a letter of advocacy and 15 minutes for each letter you send to a person in public office or other who has the power to make a change. Letter-writing campaigns are to elected officials / stakeholders, advocating for a cause (either specific to a legislative initiative or, say, encouraging a CEO to switch to ecological packaging or to give up palm oil in products).
Spread awareness through presentations that you can give virtually to groups in elementary and/or middle schools or adult groups in the community. Reach out to your target group and arrange for a time when you can present. The preparation for this will be extensive and involves several hours of research.
Outdoor Work You may feel comfortable with outdoor work. Work with others (GS or non) to manage a book drive and deliver the books to reading projects in the community.
Online Tutoring Seek out and make connections with groups to initiate live online tutoring to struggling students in minority groups.
Technology CAD (or related) design of technologies that could improve living conditions somewhere: solar lamps for school children in communities that lack electricity, easily transportable water collection systems, etc... Research to see who you could share this with to make an impact, and then send out your idea.
