We began the year by reviewing some of our foundational skills like using the distributive property and combining like terms but quickly moved to solving linear equations. We learned how to solve many types: from one-step and two-step up to multi-step equations with variables present on both sides of the equation. We worked on solving equations with algebraic fractions by multiplying both sides by the LCD to clear the fractions. We even covered solving equations that were identities or had no solution.
Secondly, we worked on solving linear inequalities, including those with multiple steps, variables on both sides and fractions. We also talked about identifying when a linear inequality had no solution or many solutions. We even made a leap into more complex curriculum by learning about compound inequalities using "and" and "or" as well as solving absolute value equations and inequalities. This unit also includes an introduction to set theory including set notation and subsets and complements of sets.
We use several types of technology in Algebra I. We keep our backpacks light by using an online eBook as well as using Google Classroom to keep track of all of our class materials. Later this year we will be using our iPad for it's graphing capabilities, and we may even be making videos of the different methods of solving quadratic equations.
