Business Education Courses are structured to meet the needs of the 21st Century. Courses such as Financial Literacy, Small Business and Corporate Accounting, Business and Marketing Essentials, and Entrepreneurship: Building a Business have been developed to introduce students to a variety of business-related topics and explore business as a possible career pathway.
These courses provide lifelong skills that reflect current workplace practices and develop career awareness, time management, and communication skills. Regardless of a student’s post-secondary plans, our technological society requires fundamental knowledge of business practices.

Business and Marketing Essentials introduces students to a wide array of entrepreneurial concepts and skills, including the role of entrepreneurship in our economy, entrepreneurial discovery processes, ideation, and preliminary start-up venture planning. Students also develop an appreciation for marketing’s pivotal role in the development and success of a new business. They become acquainted with channel management, pricing, product/service management, and promotion. Students conduct market planning including selecting target markets; market, SWOT, and competitive analyses; forecast sales; set marketing goals and objectives; select marketing metrics; and set a marketing budget. The capstone activity in the course is the development of detailed marketing plans for students’ start-up businesses. Throughout the course, students are presented ethical dilemmas and problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical thinking skills.

Corporate Accounting introduces theory and practice within the financial operations of a partnership and corporation. This in-depth course is designed for students who wish to study advanced accounting methods and procedures. Students will account for payroll, taxes, notes, bad debts, inventory and explore various depreciation methods through hands-on, real-world application. Accounting courses are essential foundations that offer students a competitive advantage when pursuing business and finance degrees and careers. This course is formerly known as Accounting 2.
Corporate Accounting satisfies one credit of the applied art, mathematics, computer, or general elective requirement for graduation.
ECONOMICS

Economics is the social science concerned with how resources are used to satisfy people’s needs and wants. Economic literacy and proficiency have many practical applications to decisions and choices made by individuals and nations about how to use scarce resources in a complex, global economy. This one semester course is skill-based and provides personal opportunities to apply economic principles to real-life situations.

Entrepreneurship: Building a Business builds on skills mastered in the Business and Marketing Essentials course by emphasizing planning and organizational processes integral to the start-up of new ventures and focusing on the continued development of students’ small businesses. Students identify resources necessary for business operations; develop organizational plans; select sources of financing for their ventures; prepare pro forma financial statements; and identify key performance indicators. This course culminates with the development of detailed business plans. Throughout the course, students are presented ethical dilemmas and problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical thinking skills.
Entrepreneurship: Building a Business satisfies one half credit of the applied art, computer, or general elective requirement for graduation.

This course focuses on the student’s role as a citizen, student, family member, consumer, and active participant in the world. This course covers the fundamental financial concepts surrounding budgeting, goal setting, banking, risk management, and consumer rights and responsibilities. These life-long skills will enhance students’ financial futures and expose them to our global economy.
Personal Financial Literacy satisfies one half credit in personal finance for graduation. *Note: students have the opportunity to earn community college credit if enrolled in the College Career Pathways (CCP) program. These credits are free and transferable to four-year universities.

This course is designed to introduce the principles of accounting taking students through the steps of the Accounting Cycle. Students will journalize and post transactions, identify and make adjusting and closing entries, and create and analyze financial statements for a service and merchandising business. Ethics in business is emphasized and explored in each chapter through real-world examples. Spreadsheet software will be utilized throughout the year providing students foundational computer skills. Students are able to incorporate content learned throughout the year in a culminating business simulation. Small Business Accounting provides foundational knowledge offering students a competitive advantage when pursuing business and finance degrees and careers. This course is formerly known as Accounting 2.

UConn ECE Personal Financial Literacy is an introduction to essential topics to personal finance for individuals and entrepreneurs. Financial literacy, personal finance topics including recordkeeping, budgeting, risk, insurance, credit, purchasing decisions, savings/investment options, income taxation of individuals and small businesses, and retirement savings.
UConn ECE Personal Financial Literacy satisfies one half credit in personal finance for graduation.
Eligibility guidelines: Successful completion of two years of high school mathematics is required.
