NOTE: We chose not to remove the items below, though they were opportunities available for summer 2023 and have since ended. We wanted to leave this up so you can get an idea of the types of programs available to students in the summer through colleges, universities and businesses. Many of the below opportunities are available every summer so if something is of interest, bookmark it!
Pre- College Programs
Did you know that most colleges and universities offer pre-college online, live virtual, or in-person programs that allow motivated students like you to discover potential majors or career paths before college? Whether you have interest in STEM, medicine, business, or more—there is a wide variety of options to help you prepare for your future.

NOTE: Some of these programs are offered at a significant cost, however all offer opportunities for scholarships and other means of financial assistance for high school students and their families.
(Some of these programs are not connected with Old Saybrook High School or it's affiliates, nor can Old Saybrook High School or it's employees recommend them. Students DO however have the opportunity to earn credit for their participation so if you participate in any of the below, or any other similar educational experience or camp in the summer, please let the CCR coordinators know. )

The “Making a Difference by Making a Video” program is for aspiring filmmakers who are upcoming high school juniors and seniors, college students, and master’s candidates at Connecticut schools.

1 Week Medical Academy
The 1-Week Medical Academy introduces you to the field of medicine and gives you a glimpse into the Georgetown University Medical Center, which includes the nationally ranked School of Medicine and School of Nursing & Health Studies, in addition to the world-renowned Lombardi Cancer Center. You'll explore topics ranging from human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and infectious diseases to surgery, cancer, and biomedical ethics. You’ll participate in hands-on labs, use a patient simulator, and focus on some of today's pressing medical issues like COVID-19, preventative medicine, heart disease, and HIV. 3 Week Medical Academy
In Georgetown's 3-Week Medical Academy, you'll register for one of three tracks (Anatomy & Physiology, Neuroscience, or Emergency Medicine), and get a snapshot of a first-year medical school curriculum while learning from Georgetown University School of Medicine faculty and medical students. Throughout the program, you’ll investigate contemporary medical challenges facing society today, discuss the latest advances affecting the applied science of medicine, and interact with experts from the field to learn how to pursue a career in medicine. In each of the three tracks, you’ll delve into your chosen area of study, gaining a deeper understanding of the topic through classroom learning as well as hands-on projects, case studies, and, in most tracks, lab work. The Online Immersion Program, designed for high school students ages 13 and up, has been created for this purpose. It offers exciting topics, covered in-depth, through online coursework led by Wake Forest University professors. The program is available year-round, and the online format allows you to study anywhere, anytime, while working at your own pace.

Rice is a community of curious thinkers, passionate dreamers and energetic doers who believe that improving the world demands more than bold thought and brave action. It takes unconventional wisdom. Our goal in creating Rice University's Precollege Online Program is to provide an experience for students ages 13+ that embodies these values. Our program is designed for high school students who wish to dive deeper into a subject that piques their interest, such as genome engineering or physiology. Each course features dynamic video lessons by renowned Rice faculty and access to mentors. Courses are available year-round, and the online format enables students to study anywhere, anytime, at their own pace. Wall Street 101 is a competitive experiential learning program for rising high school juniors and seniors interested in global finance and investing, including stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities. The sessions, designed in an age-appropriate manner, introduce students to the art and science of trading, investing, and managing a portfolio. In small classes led by Bentley-trained faculty with industry experience, students participate in lectures, case analyses, interactive trading simulations and presentations by Wall Street professionals.
All courses integrate industry-standard software with exercises and assignments to develop capital markets knowledge. In addition to class time, students work in teams to prepare stock pitches, portfolio management presentations and/or macroeconomic simulations. Students attending courses on our beautiful campus will gain hands-on experience in our world-class trading room and attend off-campus presentations at firms in the Boston area. Fairfield University Pre-College Nursing Program
In this track, students spend a week in the world of nursing, learning about the many opportunities available in this growing profession. Specific opportunities include the basics of first aid, CPR, and virtual classes in our state-of-the-art simulation lab. Students will come away with an understanding of the many possibilities a career in nursing holds with a targeted focus on their personal interests for their future in healthcare.
