Welsh Week - Monday 23rd to Friday 27th February
What an exciting week we have had for our Welsh Week. Pupils had an opportunity to get creative with their Eisteddfod competition entries. Children have also been celebrating all things Welsh and learning and performing Welsh songs and dances, developing Welsh artwork and generally immersing themselves in the Welsh language and history.
Due to the weather this afternoon, we have postponed our Tri Dewi physical activities till next week.
Thank you to all our staff for providing such a lovely immersive week for our children to celebrate all things Welsh. There has been a lot of excitement in classrooms, corridors and halls.
Thank you to Mrs Evans, Mrs Williams, Mrs Roberts and Miss Walters for creating an engaging Welsh Week for 2026.
Thank you to Ms Carlyon for creating some amazing Druid costumes for our annual Eisteddfod event - we can't wait to see these on Monday for our Eisteddfod celebrations.
Song Performance
The school was alive with the sound of music on Wednesday afternoon as children in years 3 to 6 performed with their house colour. Each house sang a beautiful rendition of Calon Lan for the Song Performance category in our Eisteddfod. We were very lucky to have Bridgend Male Choir member, Mr Russell Lewis, attend to judge the performances - we will find out who the winning house team were on Monday in our Eisteddfod!
Year 5 have recorded a lovely rendition of the Welsh National Anthem - we hope you enjoy.
Welsh Cakes
On Thursday, every child in the school was able to enjoy a freshly cooked Welsh cake! Children were able to mould dough and create a special Welsh cake just for them. The event wouldn't have happened had it not been for the dedication of Mrs Evans, Mrs Williams and Mrs Loughran, who created the dough and cooked over 400 Welsh cakes! The school smelled amazing too!
Y Darllenydd Cudd / Masked Singer Competition
Children and staff have been so excited by the Masked Singer competition - every day we have been trying to identify who is behind the mask. We are now down to 3 staff members and we will find out who our winner is on Monday. Thank you to all our staff who have taken part in the competition. A huge thank you must go to Miss Tompkinson who has pulled all the videos together to provide an exciting competition.
So far the children and staff have managed to identify and reveal the following :
Nigel Owens - Miss Davies
Catherine Zeta Jones - Mrs Roberts

Shaping the Future of Oldcastle - Parents Working Party
At Oldcastle, we are always looking for ways to improve our pupils' experience and education. We are currently embarking on an exciting project to revamp our school curriculum, and we want to ensure that the parent voice is at its very heart.
To do this effectively, we are forming a Parent Working Party.
What is a Working Party?
This isn’t a formal committee or a long-term commitment. It is a collaborative group where parents and staff sit down together to review our ideas, ask the "tough questions," and ensure that what we are building works for our entire school community.
We Need You!
Our goal is to have a truly representative group. We are looking for at least two parent representatives from each class to join us. No prior experience or "expert" knowledge is needed, just a passion for your child’s education and a willingness to share your thoughts.
Time Commitment: One-hour meetings over the next half term
Date of First Meeting: 12th March 2026. 4 pm- 5 pm
Location: Oldcastle School
How to Join
If you would like to represent your child’s class, please click the link below or pop into the school office by Tuesday, 9th March
We are really excited to collaborate with you and make our changes a huge success for the children.
