Spring Newsletter

Our topic this term is 'Through The Window'

Welcome to the Spring term in year 3

Language, Literacy and Communication

This term we are introducing a new scheme of work that focuses very closely on phonics, key word spellings, sentence capitalisation, punctuation and handwriting to support the children's writing. The children will also examine syllables in words as well as word suffixes. They will continue to develop their reading with independent accelerated reader quizzes and group guided reading sessions with the class teacher.

Mathematics

We will be consolidating basic skills already learnt (adding, subtracting, timetables and number bonds) daily through warm ups to ensure all children are confident. We will develop the children's understanding of time and data handling by sorting using Venn and Carroll diagrams. We will also continue to use Numicon and Base 10 equipment to partition 2- and 3- digit numbers with and without money and order and structure numbers to 1000.

Other Curriculum Areas

This term has a Geography focus "Through the Window" focusing on human and physical features / birds eye view / map work. We will be looking closely at the work of Martyn Evans in art, developing our sketching skills using pencils and pastels.

In Welsh we will be learning about Pets / Anifeiliaid Anwes as well as preparing for the School Eisteddfod by learning Welsh songs and poems. Children will continue to learn about different celebrations from other cultures such as Chinese New Year.

In Science we will be looking at solids, liquids and gasses and electricity providing opportunities to explore circuits.

Thrive - Emotional and Social Development

This term our Thrive - emotional and social development programme will focus on the following:

  • Children will look at following rules
  • Consider differences in opinion as well as morals and values.
  • Understand how to hold a different opinion without falling out with others

In addition, we will also continue to celebrate their achievements inside and outside of school through show and tell opportunities.
