Elementary Curriculum Overview – First Choice Online Academy
At First Choice Online Academy, our elementary program (Grades 1–4) provides a strong academic foundation while fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Students receive daily live instruction from certified teachers, paired with engaging independent activities that develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Instruction is fully aligned with Oklahoma City Public Schools and Oklahoma State Department of Education standards.
Language Arts
FCOA elementary students experience rich literature and composition activities that build strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Instruction includes phonics, spelling, word study, grammar, and usage. Students engage with both fiction and nonfiction texts, develop vocabulary, and practice expressing their ideas clearly—preparing them to become lifelong learners and confident communicators.
Mathematics
We believe every student should have the skills to solve challenging mathematical problems successfully. All students have opportunities during daily live instruction and independent learning time to engage with meaningful math tasks. As they progress, students develop concepts and skills they will use in science, technology, business, and a wide range of future careers.
Science
Students build science knowledge through hands-on experiences, inquiry-based activities, and real-world connections. Each grade builds on the skills and concepts of the previous year:
Grade 1: Explore and observe the natural world, asking and answering questions about everyday phenomena.
Grade 2: Investigate deeper questions and make predictions based on prior knowledge.
Grade 3: Use experiments and data to explain scientific concepts.
Grade 4: Apply critical thinking to investigate complex scientific questions and explore solutions.
Social Studies
Students strengthen their understanding of history, geography, civics, and economics. They learn about American symbols and holidays, compare their community to other places, and explore different cultures. Civic lessons focus on the traits and responsibilities of good citizenship. Economic concepts such as needs, wants, and community contributions are introduced and expanded.
Art & Music
Our arts program inspires creativity and self-expression. Students participate in weekly visual art and music experiences, exploring various media and techniques. Visual art includes both 2-D and 3-D projects, while music instruction introduces rhythm, melody, and cultural connections.
