The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) approved new P-12 English Language Arts Standards in April of 2023. These standards identify the essential literacy skills in speaking & listening, reading, and writing. The new standards WILL BE ASSESSED during the 2024-2025 school year.
If a student has not mastered previous grade-level standards, the teacher will need to intervene in order to fill the students' skill gaps.
The Utah State Board of Education created grade-level Core Guides to support the implementation of the ELA standards. These Core Guides inform teachers and leaders as they make English Language Arts curriculum decisions and plan instruction. The Core Guides are not intended to be read from cover to cover. They are meant as a resource document to be used, when needed, to support teacher professional learning and curriculum decisions.
Ogden School District created vertical alignment documents to help guide instruction and assessment, making setting and measuring learning goals easier. Vertical alignment ensures learning expectations progress logically from one grade level to the next. This consistency allows students to build on their knowledge and skills, creating a smoother and more effective learning progression. When standards are vertically aligned, teachers and students clearly understand what is expected at each grade level.
Grade Level English Language Arts Curriculum
Ogden School District ensures that ELA curriculum is research based. Research-based English Language Arts (ELA) curricula are designed to reflect the latest findings in education research and incorporate evidence-based practices for teaching and learning in the domain of language arts.
