Understanding Guided Reading Levels

Orchard Farm Elementary and Discovery Elementary use guided reading levels as one way to measure reading proficiency. The following link will give you descriptors and an example of what fiction and nonfiction texts look like at each guided reading level: Leveled Text Descriptors.

Texts that are below your child's guided reading level are books your child can enjoy independently. These books allow your child to enjoy the story, and practice reading fluently. Texts that are on your child's guided reading level provide opportunities for instruction. Your child can read books at this level, but will likely have to work at it. Books that are above your child's guided reading level will be challenging, and possibly frustrating. Books at these levels make great read alouds. They expose your child to the language and structures that they are not able to access on their own.

The Instructional Reading Levels document below will show you what the guided reading level expectations are for each grade level.
