Creating Resilient Landscape Studies in Response to the Era of Climate Change

Summary
This study aims to create a new spatial formation theory and technique called “Resilient Landscape Studies” in response to today’s challenges of climate change. Chiba University, the only national university in Japan that offers a course and degree in landscape studies, takes the initiative in a joint international project with France, the UK, and the Netherlands, countries that lead Landscape Studies in Europe.
Furthermore, the project will focus on creating and universalizing new techniques through global comparative analysis of the world’s most advanced practical examples, identifying and overcoming technological challenges, building theoretical frameworks based on historical knowledge, and experimenting with social implementation. Our goal is to create a new academic field and social value of Resilient Landscape Studies in the era of climate change.
Mr. Hiroshi Terashita, Chairman of Omi Tsuzukien Co., Ltd. and a "Contemporary Master Craftsman," was invited to give the 2023 Tojo Academic Society for the Promotion of Science Lecture, "Japanese Gardens in Response to Changes in Society, Environment, and Times.
Joint lecture with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Horticulture de Versailles, "Crossed Perspectives: Michio Tase and Ludivine - A Conversation on Landscapes in France and Japan" was held.
Prof.Henri Bava (President of the Association for Landscape Architecture, France), Prof.Steffen Nijhuis (Head of the Landscape Department, Delft University of Technology) and Dean Nobuhiro Matsuoka (Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture and Research Faculty, Chiba University) exchanged opinions.
Prof. Henri Bava (President of the French Association for Landscape Architecture) and Prof. Steffen Nijhuis (Head of the Landscape Department, Delft University of Technology) were invited to the International Symposium "Creation of Resilient Landscape Studies" as a kick-off symposium for this research program. of Resilient Landscape Studies" was held.
The seminar "Modern Landscapes: Intersections between Japan and France" was organized by the Maison Franco-Japonaise and the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Umifre 19) and co-organized by the International Institute for Advanced Studies of Chiba University.
On Saturday, June 22, 2024, a tsunami evacuation training exercise for local residents and tourists (role-players) was held in the Toi area of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, in cooperation with Izu City.
The “Symposium on Nature and Rivers of the Edo river and Fureai Matsudo River” was held jointly with Matsudo City. The symposium focused on the theme of river nature restoration and citizen activities, with speakers from various fields of expertise introducing their efforts throughout Japan in such areas as aquatic ecology, nature education, and river town planning.
With the cooperation of Associate Professor Shima of Toyo University, we conducted a research survey in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia. The research included interviews and site visits to real estate developers, river authorities, and residents involved with rivers and urban farmland in Jakarta, as well as a courtesy visit to Bogor Agricultural University, Chiba University's partner university.
