This year, Second grade will be utilizing the COMPASS program for math instruction. Students who qualify for the COMPASS class (our advanced learning program) will switch into Miss. Wilkinsons class for the entire math block. The remaining students will stay in our room and recieve the standard math instruction. Depending on how many students I send to Miss. Wilkinsons, I will receieve the same number of kids in addition to my class. The class list will be finalized in the first couple weeks of school based on student data.
Reveal Math is the curriculum we implement for math at Odyssey. Reveal is wonderful because of its focus on critical thinking skills, real-world application, and differentiation. Several components of Reveal allow teachers to individualize learning needs for students, giving them deeper instruction, reinforcement, or extension wherever students need it. Reveal integrates with the online program ALEKS, which develops an individualized learning path for students based on standards mastery.
For more information about the COMPASS program in 2nd grade, reach out to Miss. Wilkinson.
This year, our class will use Math Skill Maps to help students take ownership of their learning and keep families informed about their progress throughout each math unit.
After each math lesson, students will complete a short exit ticket to check their understanding of that day’s skill. When a student demonstrates mastery of the skill, they will color in the corresponding cloud on their Skill Map. If they need more practice, they will receive additional opportunities to learn, practice, and “pass off” the skill throughout the unit.
How to Read Your Child’s Skill Map
Checked box: We have learned this skill in class.
Colored cloud: Your child has mastered the skill.
Uncolored cloud: Your child is still practicing the skill.
Each skill also lists corresponding Student Practice Book pages that may be completed at home. These pages are optional but are highly encouraged for skills your child has not yet mastered.
Please have your child return their Skill Map to school each day so it can be updated as we continue learning. Together, these Skill Maps will help students monitor their progress, celebrate their growth, and identify exactly which skills they should continue practicing.
Additional practice on ALEKS, an online, self-guided, and individualized math program, is always encouraged and appreciated but not required.
