At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, our school district was kind enough to supply our classroom with seven NEW Lego Spike Essential kits. These kits are a great resource that act as a fun introduction for the students into the world of robotics and engineering. Lego provides a large library of "lesson plans" that have challenges, building instructions, and computer programming instructions. In the classroom, students work in groups and are tasked with creating a robot aimed at specific challenges. They then work through building the robot using the Lego pieces, motors, and/or sensors. They are then tasked with connecting the robot to their chromebook and programming it to perform certain actions. They are often then challenged with exploring their robot and performing other tasks.
