After conducting a series of focus groups and interviews, students consistently reported they could not find resources and/or did not have information about the resources available to them. They indicated that the Student Announcement system was not a preferred way to find out about events and programs on campus. They indicated a preference for something customizable for them to use, that targets their interests, and merges systems so they do not have to look for resources in multiple areas.
Resources are available to students, faculty, and staff, however, many times resources are siloed and scattered, so they are not easily accessible.
There are multiple calendar systems at the university:
academic
event
Outlook/Google, etc.
student schedules
None of the calendar systems work together. While the University event calendar has a filter option, some filters do not work for the end users, and some provide overwhelming amounts of information that are not pertinent to the information people are trying to find.
Students reported wanting this concept in an app format.
Currently, the University Event has a lot of information that is filterable, however, some of the filters under "Audience" do not pull information correctly. There is no customization and everything looks similar.
We propose adding colors to specific events, allowing students, faculty, and staff to merge their class schedules and work calendars, as well as allowing customizable fields.
In addition, when items are clicked, they can provide more information, even with the customizable options.

What already exists:
There is currently a student calendar in the ODU portal where students can create custom options on their Google calendars, but options are limited and broad and no one knows about them.
What they can implement:
Allow students to sync their academic calendar with their Google calendar (before Fall 2021)
Have a button from the University calendar to “Add to my Calendar” (before Fall 2021)
This only works for students Google calendars
They see issues with integrating this into F/S calendars and if this can be done, it will be much further down the road (1-2 years if possible)
Add color coding to calendar (Spring 2022)
At the beginning of each semester, they can have a banner scroll to inform students about custom options (Spring 2022)
i.e., if they are only interested in football and community outreach events, they can choose those two customizations and be alerted via a calendar feed
calendar feed was preferred over a calendar event to reduce information overload
Sports and arts already have subcategories in the university event calendar, but we need to come up with more categories and subcategories for the customization piece (Summer 2022).
Collect statistical use of customizable calendar system
tracking (e.g., attendance, allowing check-ins, etc.)
Assessment
user satisfaction surveys

Removing barriers is necessary to help increase student success and outcomes.
