Talked with faculty, students, administrators, and staff to jumpstart our empathy process.
Conducted one-on-one zoom interviews with deans, associate deans, College of Sciences faculty, lecturers, and staff, Innovate Monarch students using active listening.
Created a list of barriers to be addressed, stayed focused on identifying concerns.
This empathy improved our approach to the challenge.
Communication and a lack thereof was the biggest problem among all stakeholders. The multi-faceted aspects of communication revealed a pattern of miscommunication - service and support entities had limited outreach; students and faculty not communicating; problematic ODU website.
Improving the culture of communication. For example decreasing risks perceived by students seeking help, encouraging faculty to initiate conversations with diverse students with respect, students and faculty need opportunities to build better relationships.
The need for increased awareness of the MSRC. Some students were paying for private math tutoring instead of using the free MSRC. Some faculty were unaware of the MSRC support services.
"Professors put all students on the same math level, but every student learns differently."
- Innovate Lumina Monarch Student
"Some of it is brain dumping, rope learning, and I tell students that it’s more than getting an “A”. An “A” doesn’t equate to thorough understanding of certain concepts." - Terri Grant, Math Lecturer
“Students have identified communication as a major challenge. We need to work on faculty-student communication channels and make sure that students know what resources are available to them and how to access those resources.” - Dean Gail Dodge
We brainstormed many ideas to come up with our solution (picture shown below)
What we did was combine three ideas into one multifaceted solution
We believe our solution will benefit all Monarchs and get better with time
Shown above is a graph prioritizing our ideas during the ideation phase.
Our team developed a multi-faceted solution so we can help students from all backgrounds experience math differently!
