Occupational Therapists focus their work with clients on the everyday occupations that we need and want to do that bring meaning to the lives of our clients and fill their time (AOTA, 2020). The occupations in which we engage, the habits, routines, and roles that we value, the environments in which we perform them, and the factors that influence the way that we preform them make up the domain of our profession. Nine areas of occupation are included in our domain.
By engaging in occupations of value, clients improve their performance skills, participation, and role competence. Their satisfaction, quality of life, and well-being increases. And, clients may prevent further illness and injury.
The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework - 4 (OTPF - 4) is an official document of the American Occupational Therapy Association and serves as a valuable practice tool for the profession. Updated in 2020 and in its fourth edition, the OTPF - 4 provides occupational therapy professionals with information about the domain and the process of occupational therapy. Our domain, described above, outlines our professional expertise. Our process guides how we promote our clients' outcomes.
Occupational therapists evaluate occupational needs, problems, risks, and concerns.

The domain and process of occupational therapy focuses uniquely on occupation. Occupational therapists concern themselves with what their clients need and want to do and use those interests as therapeutic interventions to promote client participation, health, and well-being. Take a moment to think of a way in which engagement in an occupation that you value improved your performance of that occupation. What was the effect of that performance?
Using the Reflection Summary document, share your thoughts about the value of occupation as a means, or the tool used to improve participation, as well as and ends, or the outcome of the therapeutic intervention.
