The common stereotypes surrounding a library are endless. However, many new libraries are breaking down those boundaries and shinning a new light on the dark, damp and dusty shelves. For instance, if we look to our neighbor the Slover Library in Norfolk, we can see how simple manipulations of lighting, rearranging seating areas, and adding some unique artwork can truly lighten the atmosphere. Although we do not have the budget to be “keeping up with the Joneses”, we can still freshen up our Learning Commons to the best of our ability.
Being students ourselves, we can understand what other students close to our age are looking for. The front of the library is ideal for high tables and bar stools, just like the ones you would find at a local Starbucks or other type of fancy coffee shop.
Power plugs for every seat at the tables would be included, while wireless charging pads would be a huge asset, despite requiring a bigger budget. Students won't just be able to enjoy and utilize their time at the ODU Library to the most of their abilities, but with this simple upgrade of bar stool tables, the library will be able to handle more students than before at once, especially during peak hours (12:00pm) where it is often hard to find a seat you like.
Upgrading some of the library's oldest computers that have hardware designed to run the 10 year old Windows 7 software, but currently run Windows 10 is vital. New, higher resolution all in one desktops will provide a huge boost to the library's capabilities and how students view it.
All in one computers, just like some of the ones the library already owns, save space and money, and provide the best possible experience for students in a university environment.
A much needed upgrade like this one, that would include both Macs and Windows, would ensure that the library will once again offer computing power to students, significantly more than what students can already find in their personal computers/tablets.
Throughout the years, libraries around the world have evolved. From being places were books were stored and accessed by the public, to places where they could access writing materials, and eventually where they could access the internet.
Today, especially in the setting of a beautiful bustling campus, a relaxation area is necessary for students to peacefully relax, escape from their everyday life, read a book, and perhaps finish an assignment from their personal computer.
With many students facing issues utilizing some of the programs offered, with printing and perhaps with new software that might come with the new technologies that we are bringing on campus, a tech group, a group of library workers specifically dedicated and trained to help other students with the most simple to the most complex technology issues, would be a huge asset!
