Users struggle to understand security warnings, leading them to fall for phishing and online scams. ClearShield simplifies cybersecurity by providing clear, real-time guidance that helps users make safe decisions before it’s too late.
Every day, millions of people encounter something suspicious online and have no idea what to do. A confusing warning pops up, an email arrives that looks almost real, a website asks for information that feels off, and instead of getting help, people get a wall of technical language that means nothing to them. This is the problem ClearShield exists to solve... everyday people are being left unprotected because the tools designed to keep them safe were never designed with them in mind.
The consequences are real and personal. People lose their life savings to phishing scams. They hand over sensitive information to fake websites. They call numbers that connect them straight to criminals. In 2023 alone, the FBI reported Americans lost over $12.5 billion to cybercrime, with older adults hit the hardest. This is not an abstract statistic. It is someone's retirement account emptied overnight.
At its core, this is a human problem. Fear and confusion are universal. Most non-technical users ignore security warnings not because they are careless, but because nobody ever explained what those warnings actually mean. ClearShield changes that by translating cybersecurity into plain, calm language tailored to the person reading it.
The market is enormous. Over 4 billion people use the internet daily, and the vast majority have no formal cybersecurity knowledge. Through our own empathy research, we heard directly from users across age groups who expressed real frustration with existing tools and a genuine desire for something simpler and more human.
Our design thinking process for ClearShield was centered around understanding how real users experience online threats, not just how the technology works. We focused on the Empathetic & Human-Centered mindset by recognizing that many users feel confused or overwhelmed by cybersecurity warnings. Instead of building a tool for experts, we designed ClearShield to explain threats in simple, clear language and guide users step-by-step, making security accessible to everyone.
We also embraced the Iterate, Iterate, Iterate mindset throughout development. We tested our ideas with real users and continuously refined the design based on their feedback. This helped us improve clarity, usability, and overall effectiveness. By iterating, we ensured that ClearShield is not only functional but also intuitive and genuinely helpful in real-world situations.
Our team came to understand this problem by focusing on how real users experience online security. We found that many people see security warnings but do not understand what they mean or what to do next. Instead of feeling protected, users often feel confused or rushed, which leads them to ignore warnings or click unsafe links.
By stepping into the shoes of our users, we realized that most cybersecurity tools are designed for experts, not everyday people. Many users feel embarrassed asking for help and would rather guess than admit they are unsure. This changed our perspective. We first thought the issue was a lack of awareness, but we learned it is really a lack of clear guidance.
Our users are everyday internet users, especially students who are constantly online but do not have a cybersecurity background. What we learned is simple. People do not just want warnings. They want clear explanations and guidance they can trust. This insight shaped ClearShield into a tool that helps users feel confident and safe online.
