Medieval Warfare

In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages (or Medieval Period) lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.

I decided to begin wargaming in the medieval period because of the awesome figures made by Schleich that were available in the early years of 2000. It all started by my wife who bought some knights for my son Jansen as a birthday present. I decided to build him a castle to play with the knights. My three sons enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue to add on to the castle and continue to collect the Schleich figures whenever I could. The knights were very reasonable which cost about $3.50 a piece for stand alone figures to $12 for a knight on horseback. All the knights I have in my collection have not been produced for about 10 years. The prices have tripled since then and many cannot be found.

A friend of mine name Joe and my boys decided to design a set of rules that were realistic but fun for all ages. We play -tested the rules for a few years and I finally decided to take the collection to a historical wargaming convention were others could play the game. It was such a success that we were the rave of the convention. I am proud to say we won an award. Not only did we get recognized but our photos were shown in a prestigious wargaming magazine called "Miniature Wargames" ,issue number 318 October 2009. I have been sharing this fun medieval period of time with Octorara students since winning the award. Check the image below.

The figures are made of vinyl and all hand painted. All the other pieces which includes the castle, siege equipment and bases are all handmade from wood(yellow poplar).
