A Charrette is a collaborative session, or short series of intense workshops, in which a group of designers drafts a solution to a design problem, in partnership with all stakeholders. A charrette is like a kick-off where many considerations must be factored into a design project scope before it gets underway. Everyone brings their unique perspective to the problem and the designers are there to facilitate consensus.
Charrettes are used extensively in urban planning, where diverse communities are involved. Here are some other everyday examples of how a project manager could use a charrette:
A wedding planner holds a family Zoom meeting to design a ceremony event
A Tech Start-up company plans a leadership retreat
A basketball team plans a fundraiser for a local community centre
Below are 9 examples of Design Charrett's in action. Followed by some videos about how to run a Charrette. These examples are from a variety of different industries but all show what this experience could be like and how it helped them to meet their goals. Work with your classmates or think on your own to develop a list of 5 - 10 Tips for running a good Charrette from what you hear or see in the videos. Record your list in your Student Workbook.

Charrette's are tools that Project Managers could use to help get things rolling on a project. This could be used at various times in the Project Cycle or in development of your Project charter. This strategy allows participants and stakeholders to come together to develop possible outcomes that can then be reviewed/implemented.
