Hand hygiene refers to having clean hands. We can clean our hands by washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer to handrub. If your hands are visibly soiled, you'll need to perform hand washing. Most other times, handrub is acceptable.
Hand hygiene is the single most important measure for preventing infection transmission. Healthcare workers' hands can carry up to 10,000 bacteria per square centimeter. While not all bacteria are bad, when working in settings with vulnerable populations it’s important to decrease infection risk as much as possible.
