The goal of these projects is to encourage students to take an active role in improving the lives of people in their local community through authentic opportunities inside and outside of school. We hope to instill a passion for activism and volunteering that will extend beyond the scope of these projects, and support our students in becoming positive, caring members of their community, locally and globally.
These projects are also a way for students to continue their study of the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Prior to beginning the project process, we spent time examining the first five goals, all of which deal with some form of inequality (poverty, hunger, health, education, and gender, respectively). We conducted activities in which we defined key words related to these issues, examined data to help us better understand how many people are impacted by the issues, watched videos that depict the issues in real life, and did role play activities to help students better understand the more difficult concepts we were discussing. This early work in the unit established the background knowledge students would need in order to be successful with the project brainstorming and planning processes.
