Reduced Inequality - Project Brainstorming

The brainstorming stage of these projects began at the Cultivating Pathways to Sustainability event that Mr. Chadburn attended with eight students in early October. At that event, students prioritized the Global Goals based on what they felt our greatest needs were in the local Orleans community. They determined that Goal #1 (No Poverty) and Goal #2 (Zero Hunger) were most pressing. They then proceeded to come up with ideas in several categories:

What are the resources we know of that already exist in our community to support these goals?
What could we do, in addition to those resources, to help?
Who are the people/groups that we could work with to achieve these goals?
How will we ensure that people in the community know about our projects?

Their work (at right) was the catalyst for getting the project planning stage started with all of the other 5th/6th grade students.

After discussing the many options the Cultivating Pathways team brought back, we settled as a group on three projects. As a whole group, we determined action steps for each of the projects so students would clearly understand the many responsibilities that would go into making them happen.

Students then completed a survey about which projects they felt would be most helpful to the community, as well as being fun to complete with a group. We created project groups based on the results of that survey and which project students were most interested in pursuing.

Along with the action steps we listed, we also created some "we can" statements to go with them and to help guide us forward in our work.

Group Planning

Next, students met with their groups, to start planning the specifics of their projects. That planning is not yet complete, but the work they have done so far is shown in the three documents below (one for each of the project groups).
