Common Computer Science References
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
create a GitHub repo / Codespace
create a Codespaces instance
review logging into GitHub and Repl.it
go over what an IDE (integrated development environment) is (see video)
go over what a GitHub repo is:
go over creating a Codespace IDE / Repo:
what is Codespaces → a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) from GitHub
do demo of how to create one
NOTE: click on the link in Google Classroom, it will create a GitHub Repository for you and then open up a Codespace with it inside
in the textbook Computer Based Problem Solving
read the Introduction (the entire intro, including the 2 sub parts)
create a CodeSpace IDE instance:
NOTE: ENSURE you are NOT in incognito mode in Chrome, or using Codespaces will not work properly!
ENSURE you are signed in to GitHub to use GitHub Classroom
authorize GitHub Classroom when asked
use provided link
when asked, ensure you select your GitHub account, not another student's!
accept the assignment
after a moment, hit the refresh button on Chrome
then click on the GitHub repo link
select "Code" and start up the new CodeSpace
take a screenshot once it is up and running
ensure you can get back to your Codespace from within GitHub, on top right menu
add "Extensions" to your codespace
see here for extensions you should be adding
once added, ensure you "sync" your settings to GitHub, so you can retrieve them for the next codespace
remember, you MUST have an entry for EVERY SINGLE LESSON
see the example document to know what to submit → Jane Smith - ICS3U - Intro-03.pdf (see file below: ↓)
try a coding tutorial here:
do the 2nd tutorial series, located in the green land
take a screenshot of what you were able to accomplish
yes, there is homework but it is not hard!
take a picture of your computer logged into CodeSpaces at home with the home screen showing; yes that is it!
make sure I can see not only the screen but your entire computer setup
upload this picture to the Google Doc for today
NOTE: You can turn on "Closed Captions" to see a printout of what is being said by selecting the "CC" button.
You can also have it translate the closed captions by going to "Settings, Subtitles/CC, Auto-translate" and then pick your prefered language.
