Science,
Art, & Other Suggestions

  • Scholastic US has links to many of the online story books with activities and topics linked to science, and social studies. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-3-5.html

  • Here is a list of excellent virtual events including daily lunch doodles with Mo Willems, dance classes, and sing alongs: https://www.charlotteonthecheap.com/virtual-events-kids/

  • Nature Walk/Scavenger Hunt - collect items from nature and sort, count or make patterns. Use items from nature to create crafts or paint. (We painted sticks and hung them on a nearby tree to spread some cheer)

  • Lego/Blocks/Connecting Cubes/MagnaTiles/Loose Parts - use building materials to create 2D and 3D shapes, build structures, measure the length/height of items around the house, build ramps for cars and marbles, build bridges, create patterns. Sticks, straws, clothes pegs, cups, containers, etc.

  • Baking/Cooking (great for scientific procedures, reading procedural texts, plus lots of math & measurement involved!)

  • Board Games (helps develop skills like turn-taking, decision making, social interaction, critical thinking, subitizing using dice, 1:1 correspondence when moving pieces along the board, etc.)

  • Make a positive message message poster and put it up on a tree, window, door, car, etc.

  • Neighbourhood window walk- complete a piece of art from the day's theme and put it up in your window. Go for a walk to see who else has done the challenge. (I found this on the internet and have been surprised to see how many shamrocks and silly faces were in windows during my daily walks)
