There are many components for students to learn how to read. For Multilingual learners, building the skills required for word recognition is critical for English language acquisition.
For students to recognize words, they need three components:
Phonological Awareness
Decoding
Sight Recognition
A good place to start with beginner ELD students is with a Core Phonics Survey.
A UFLI manual is available at each ESL/ELD centre
PHONICS
Instructional focus is on the graphemes or letters that represent the sounds we hear in spoken words.
Lessons are visual and auditory, matching phonemes to graphemes.
Students apply their knowledge of phonemic awareness and phonics to decode and encode words in print.
- Assess using the Core Phonics Survey
- Use marks to determine whole group and small group learning
