Naomi Osaka is a great supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, following the numerous deaths of Black people killed by the police and others in the United States in recent years. In fact, during the 2020 U.S. Open, she walked on to the court seven times with seven different masks with the names of various victims of gun violence. In the final which she won, she chose to pay homage to Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy, who died from a bullet fired by the Cleveland police in 2014.
