Inside the Crafts Course at John McCrae

Feb 15, 2021 — Over the past year has been a real roller coaster for the education system for parents, students, and teachers. It has been extremely stressful for everyone with so many changes we have had to adjust to during this pandemic with lockdown restrictions and stay at home orders. It can be particularly difficult to do hands-on courses at home every other day regardless if you attend school or are a full time online student. It might be due to the fact that you don’t have the right materials or machines available to you or that instructions are hard to understand but this was not the case with the Crafts course.
I took grade 10 crafts last quadmester and I have to say it was one of my favourite courses for a vast amount of reasons. First, Ms.Schwarzkopf is an excellent teacher, as she always tried her best to help us with materials we needed at home and made the transition from school to online as smooth as possible. She would personally take it into her hands to deliver materials that her students didn’t have at home to their front doorstep which isn’t an opportunity most students get. Many people couldn’t go out and buy materials for school. She made contacting her for help and any questions we had effortless which is a challenge I know many people face.
This course allows you to branch out and be more creative and have more control over your work. You also get to create many things you may just end up keeping and using for example tie dye shirts and, 3D decorative letters, and many more. By far the best part about taking crafts is that you don't need any prior experience or knowledge to take it. I think this brings a sense of equality and peace as you don’t have to wonder whether or not you are on the same page as your classmates.
The workload of the course is just right and overall a laid back class. I never found myself in a predicament with being too behind in class or late at night stressing over handing in a project before 11:59:59 the day it's due. To sum up everything, I highly recommend that you look into taking a crafts course if not already. Below are some pictures of projects made in the craft course.

Learning at home hasn't been easy for anyone, but it's been especially hard on classes are that more 'hands-on'. One of those classes, grade 10 Crafts, took inspiration from other artists and their own surroundings to produce some impressive pieces.
The work above by American glass artist Chuhily, inspired the piece beside it, made by a member of the class. Check out this and all the other pieces made by the Crafts class on the carousel!
