Here are some study questions for Chapters 5-7. They're not fantastic (from my earlier days of teaching), but they will help you focus/notice things. Also, the page numbers are from my book, but they may help you find things in yours - not sure what version you're using!
What is Gatsby wearing for his reunion with Daisy? Why do you think he chose to put on that outfit? (In other words, specifically analyze each color.)(p.89)
How would you describe Gatsby's behavior during the tea? He goes through three visible changes. What are they? (See pp. 90-93; 94; 97)
Why does Gatsby invite Daisy to his mansion in Chap. 5?
When Nick says on p. 101 that Daisy's voice could not be over-dreamed, what does he mean? How does this fit in with the description of Daisy's voice in Chap. 1? (p. 13 - bottom) Why is it significant that Gatsby describes Daisy's voice as being "full of money" on p. 127? (In other words, how does this explain its charm to each of the various characters?)
Why is it significant that Gatsby changed his name from James Gatz to Gatsby? Do you know of characters in other novels (not necessarily from this year) who changed their names? (Think of The Scarlet Letter if you’re absolutely stumped.) Why did they do this? Is Gatsby’s reason similar? (Hint: yes/no is not a complete answer here.)
Briefly explain Gatsby's relationship with Cody.
How is Gatsby's party in Chapter 6 different from previous parties? (See p. 110) What is Daisy's response to this party? Consider quoting and explaining. (pp. 113-114)
Gatsby thinks he can recapture the past. (See p. 116) Why is this comment significant?
What scene in another chapter does the second scene of Chap 7 (at the Buchanan's) remind us of? (Be specific.) Has the Buchanan's life changed significantly since Gatsby came into it? (See pp. 120-126)
Why doesn't Fitzgerald reveal details about the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby? All we really know is that Daisy often goes over to Gatsby's house in the afternoons. Does this detract from the plot line and the overall effect of what's going on in the book? (This is an opinion question, but use your ideas about themes and etc. to support your idea.)
What is the weather like during chapter 7 and how is that significant? How does it parallel the progression of the plot? (See pp. 120-122)
How does Gatsby react to Pammy Buchanan? Why does Nick say "I don't think he ever really believed in its existence before" on p. 123?
At this point in the novel (Chap 7), Tom and Mr. Wilson come to a common realization. What is it and how do the respective men deal with it?
What is the conflict between Gatsby and Tom Buchanan in chapter 7? What is the result? Who wins?
What is the "death car"? (See p. 144)
In Chapter 7, Nick suddenly realizes that it is his 30th birthday (p. 143). Why is this detail significant? How does this parallel what is going on?
How does Nick's attitude toward Jordan change at the end of this chapter? (See p. 150) Why?
