If you DON’T have a card, you can create a virtual temporary card in our Website.
Here is how to get a TEMPORARY VIRTUAL library card – each child will have to go through this process:
1. Start at https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en
2. Click on Home at the top left-hand side of the screen
3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Webpage, and under the column About OPL, click on the link entitled Get a library card
4. In the right-hand margin, under Explore further, click on Get a library card
5. Fill out the little form, indicating a home address in Ottawa, and click on the blue button Submit at the bottom of the page
6. Check your E-mails and take note of the 6 or 7-digit temporary card number you will have received – this account is only valid for six weeks
Here is how you would usually access E-books or databases
1. Start at https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en
2. Click on Log in (green or red button) at the top right-hand corner of the screen
3. Enter your library card number in the first box with NO hyphen and NO space and your PIN number in the second box (your PIN is usuallythe last four digits of your telephone number).
4. Click on Kids at the top left part of the page
5. Then click on view all Kids e-books.
6. Scroll the list and click on a book that you would like to read. OR if you know the title of the book you would like, enter the title in the search box.
7. Once you click on the picture of the book you would like to read, the book info pops up and you will see if it is available to download or if it is being used.
8. If the book is available, click on checkout now.
9. Then you can download it if you are signed in.
10. You can also download an Ottawa Public Library book right from your tablet in OverDrive. Just add the Ottawa Public library to your libraries in Overdrive and it will take you to the Ottawa Public Library's home page.
Keep in mind that you need an active library card to borrow E-BOOKS, and that you need to download the OverDrive app (or Libby, which is made by OverDrive and much easier to use) OR Cloud Library OR the Adobe Digital Editions app and authorize it on your device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) before you can borrow E-BOOKS.
The app you will need will depend on the device that you are using; typically, OverDrive or Libby or Cloud Library is needed for tablets and smartphones, whereas Adobe Digital Editions is needed for laptops, computers, and older E‑readers.
