Vape devices and nicotine solutions pose hazards to people and the environment and require proper handling, storage, and disposal. Toxic nicotine can contaminate soil, while lithium-ion batteries create risks for fires if not recycled correctly.
The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) has compiled this guidance sheet to help K-12 schools in California manage vape waste safely.
Distribute this resource to school administrators and other personnel to protect their health and safety.
University of California San Diego
If a student is repeatedly vaping while at school, it can be a sign of addiction. At the same time, students may face barriers like stigma and limited resources, which can prevent them from seeking help.
In addition to YVAPE, UC San Diego also operates Kick It California, a no-cost smoking and vaping cessation program.
Kick It California has a variety of cessation support programs, including a self-guided app, instructional videos, text message coaching, and live counseling via phone or chat. Students can access services directly or through a student referral form.
Incorporate Kick It California referrals into your intervention procedures to maximize students' access to supportive services, particularly if you are addressing a student's second or third incident.
