The community project (CP) provides an opportunity for students of MYP Year 3 to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning. As a consolidation of learning ,the community project engages in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community.
Although, implementing Community Project is not mandatory for schools offering an MYP programme including years 3,4 and 5, we at OIS strongly believe in giving back to the society. One of our OIS core values of Social responsibility firmly resonates with this thought. Our student’s enthusiasm and interest in contributing back to the society led us to take the decision to go ahead with the Community Project.
The MYP community project supports raising awareness needs in the community, build the attributes of the IB learner profile, strengthen ATL skills, encourage reflective nature of inquiry and foster the development of independent, lifelong learners.
Students experience the responsibility of completing a significant piece of work over an extended period of time, as well as develop the need to reflect on their learning and the outcomes of their work which are the key skills that prepare students for success in further study, in their workplace and the community.
The students can work individually, in pairs and/or no more than groups of three under the guidance of a Supervisor, with an opportunity to share their learning with their supervisors and peers at the culmination of this project.
The objectives of the community project states the specific targets that are set for learning. They define what the student should be able to accomplish as a result of completing the community project.
These objectives relate directly to the assessment criteria found in the MYP Projects guide published by IBO (International Baccalaureate Organisation, 2015).

Students should be able to:
i. define a goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interests
ii. identify prior learning and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the project
iii. demonstrate research skills.
B - Planning
Students should be able to:
i. develop a proposal for action to serve the need in the community
ii. plan and record the development process of the project
iii. demonstrate self-management skills.
C - Taking action
Students should be able to:
i. demonstrate service as action as a result of the project
ii. demonstrate thinking skills
iii. demonstrate communication and social skills.
D- Reflecting
Students should be able to:
i. evaluate the quality of the service as action against the proposal
ii. reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge and understanding of service learning
iii. reflect on their development of ATL skills.
Action in the MYP builds upon the action initiated in the PYP and continues as an essential component of the learning process, both as part of the programme’s educational philosophy and as a practical outcome of students’ learning. The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community.
With appropriate guidance and support, MYP students should, through their engagement with service as action:
These learning outcomes identify the substance of students’ self-reflection on service as action. All of these learning outcomes are closely associated with IB learner profile attributes and ATL skills. Through their participation in service, students can become more confident, self-regulated learners.
The Personal Project (PP) is a culmination of students’ experience in the MYP and is completed in Grade 10.
Being a core component of the programme, PP is mandatory for all students. The PP encourages students to practise and strengthen their ATL skills, to consolidate prior and subject-specific learning, and to develop an area of personal interest. Although students work on and complete their PP in the final year of MYP, at OIS JVLR we aim to introduce the PP to students, parents and teachers in the second semester of Grade 9.
The personal project provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience the responsibility of completing a significant and often creative piece of work over an extended period of time, as well as the need to reflect on their learning and the outcomes of their work - key skills that prepare students for success in further study, the workplace and the community.
Each student develops a personal project independently with guidance from a project supervisor and will have the opportunity to share their work with the school community through an exhibition at the end of Grade 10.
The objectives of the personal project state the specific targets that are set for learning. They define what the student should be able to accomplish as a result of completing the personal project.
These objectives relate directly to the assessment criteria found in the MYP Projects guide published by IBO.
