Oberlin has many spaces available to help you create! The following is our attempt to summarize them.

Student-Run clubs and spaces

Accessible to all students

OC3D

Oberlin's student-led maker co-op. Located in Wilder 329, OC3D's lab serves as a catch-all makerspace for members of the Oberlin community.

Tools: Electronics, Arduinos, 3D printers, handheld tools, xacto blades, button maker, bits + bolts

Craft Room

Wilder's Mysterious craft room. Located on the third floor of Wilder.

Tools: Sewing Machines, Looms, various spare fabrics and craft supplies

Pottery Co-op

Oberlin's community-run pottery space! 30 dollar membership fee per semester. They hold consistent office hours too ~

Tools: Pottery wheels, clay tools, clay, kilns (gas and electric), slab roller, glazes

Located: Parking lot behind the facilities building (behind Mudd)

Film Co-op

The Oberlin Film Co-op is a student run organization dedicated to promoting filmmaking on the Oberlin campus. They can train students to set up for, shoot, and edit film.

Tools: Film equipment, editing supplies, subsidized film + film processing

Exhibition Initiative

Exhibition initiative (ExI) is a student arts organization that works to organize and curate student exhibitions and projects, bring artists and art-related speakers to campus, and to be a resource for learning about student art events on campus and in the community.

Tools: Space and Resources

Comix Collective

Make some comics, become a better comic writer, + print your zines (also applies to writers and illustrators)

Tools: Risograph printer, sticker making equipment, zine making, pin + patch making (?)

Located: Noah Basement (comix dungeon)

Yeo press

The Mission of Yeo Press is to strengthen and broaden Oberlin College and community's interest in printmedia. Requires you to have taken a printmaking class with Kristina Paabus.

Tools: Access to the print lab + means to sell your prints

Located: Ward Art building basement

Figure drawing club

Figure drawing club with live model, no enrollment in an arts course necessary

Tools: Live model, byo paper + drawing materials

OPAC (Oberlin Photographic Association Cooperative)

Develop black and white film + photographs

Tools: Darkroom, enlargers, chemicals and other support equipment for print and negative developing, low cost photography supplies

College-run Spaces

Accessible to students within major/ with appropriate training

OCMC (Oberlin College Media Center)

Open to all. A program within Oberlin Center for Technologically Enhanced Teaching (OCTET), which connects technically trained students with courses, faculty, staff, and other students to increase creative media literacy, exploration, and innovation.

Tools: 3D printing, Large format printing, Adobe software, Final cut pro, Printers

Located: Mudd Library 113 (and nearby)

Art Media Lab

Must be enrolled in a Studio Art or Cinema course. Another media lab designed with art students in mind.

Tools: Adobe, quality color printer, Apeture, Max, Garageband, Audio editing rooms

CILC (Cooper International Learning Center)

Open to all. While designed to enable language learning, the CILC offers many technologies and is very welcoming to all kinds of makers! (plus it has some great plants)

Tools: Podcast recording studio, greenscreen, 3D printers

A/V Department

Access for academic use only (no personal projects). Oberlin's Audio/ Visual department

TIMARA Studios

Open Lab for all. Recording space for trained students only. TIMARA (technology in music and related arts) majors' resources. They have a lot of stuff here, mostly focused on electronic music production.

Tools: Recording studio, synths, digital audio workstations (DAWs), electronics + tinkering tools,

Letterpress Studio

Access by class/ for trained students only. The Letterpress Studio provides opportunities to learn to compose text by hand using cold type, and to operate both cylinder and iron platen presses.

Greater OHIO community-run spaces

Accessible to students with means of transport (and often fees)

LCCC Fab Lab

A Fab Lab is a collection of commercially available machines that can be used to "make just about anything with features bigger than those of a computer chip." Realistically, it offers the tools needed to "conceptualize, design, develop, fabricate and test” a wide variety of things.

Tools: Laser cutter, vinyl cutter, CNC (precision, large, vertical), 3D printers, 3D scanners, waterjet cutter, electronics. Click here for a full list

Firelands Arts Association (FAVA)

Founded in 1979, The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts is an independent, non-profit art organization in Oberlin, Ohio dedicated to enhancing public appreciation of and participation in the visual arts through exhibitions and related educational and community activities.
