What is Community Music?

Community music is a type of community engagement that consists of collaborative music making between facilitators and participants. Community music strives to make music without the constraints of a set curriculum and “learning objectives.” It instead focuses on the people participating, equality of opportunity, and diversity. All who wish to participate are welcome to and do not need any prior musical experience. There is a musical emphasis on listening, improvising, musically inventing, and performing. Community music focuses on creating music together in a low-pressure environment to encourage connection between participants and to develop a foundation for making music.
