Secretary's Report: Full OASL Board Meeting
October 15, 2023

Summary of meeting/topics discussed:

• The Board did a thorough recap of the Fall Conference and discussed ideas for future conferences.

• For photos from the conference, check out the oasloregon handle on Instagram and the OASL Facebook page. 

• The 2024 Fall Conference will be in Portland in early October.

• Keely Nudo presented the Treasurer’s Report and shared that OASL’s overall financial picture remains good. 

• OASL is looking for a volunteer to finish out the Treasurer’s two year term that ends in 2025.

• The next Board meeting will be held via Zoom on Friday, January 12th from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Summary of meeting/topics discussed:

• The Board adopted the revised job description exemplars which are posted on the OASL website.

• The Board approved the 2023-24 budget.

• The Board voted to change the name of the Petrie scholarship (TBD), set the scholarship amount to $1000, and use the earnings from the endowment from Connie Hull to fund the scholarship.

• The Board adopted the new logo designed by Fiver that was used for the fall 2022 conference and is posted on the OASL website.

• Elaine Ferrell-Burns was nominated and the Board elected her to continue serving as an At-Large rep on the Executive Committee for another two-year term.

• Committee chairs gave reports on the work of their committees.

• Region reps met to create a webinar plan for the year, while the rest of the group reviewed fall conference session proposals.

• The October Board meeting will be in Lincoln City on Sunday, October 15th.

May 23, 2023

Summary of meeting/topics discussed:

• The board transition occurs annually at the May board meeting where members finishing their terms are thanked for their service and incoming members are welcomed.

  • Outgoing Past-President Grace Butler was thanked for her multiple years of service on the board, dedication, and advocacy.

  • Incoming Treasurer Keely Nudo was welcomed to the OASL Board.

  • Jen Maurer was thanked for serving as Treasurer and offering to continue answering questions over the next year.

• Grace Butler shared information about the new Gregory Lum AASL National Conference Grant: Application Link and Criteria and Scoring Rubric

• OASL members are encouraged to attend and consider submitting session proposals for the OCTE, OCSS, OSLA Joint Conference on 11/4. It will be at Lincoln High School in Portland and is the same weekend as the Portland Book Festival. OASL will have a table at the conference. 

• Jen Maurer presented the Treasurer’s report and the draft 2023-24 OASL budget that she and Ayn Frazee compiled.

• Elaine shared a report from the Reading Engagement Committee. Laura Axon and Carrie Light offered to be Co-Chairs of the ORCA Committee and are working to update ORCA’s web presence.

• Jean Gritter provided an Advocacy Committee update. 

  • They have been working with OSBA on OASL participation at the OSBA conference. 

  • SB1075 is in Ways & Means.

• Ayn Frazee, Sarah Reames (Conference Chair), and Michelle Cottrell (Local Arrangements) shared preliminary information about the Fall Conference.

• Grace Butler provided board election updates. 

  • There are still several open positions. Please contact Jessica Lorentz-Smith if you are interested in volunteering.

  • Congratulations to the following people who were elected to positions:

    • Higher Ed Rep: Pam Kessinger

    • Region 3 Rep: Amy Page

    • Teaching & Learning Chair - Leigh Morlock 

    • Treasurer: Keely Nudo

    • President-Elect: Jen McKenzie

• Ann Poteet gave an Awards Committee update. She and Lori McGreal are working together on the Recognitions Committee. 

• The OASL Summer Board retreat will be Tuesday, August 1st in Salem.
