Mohamed Al-Shabrawey, MBBCH (M.D.), M.Sc., Ph.D.
Principle Investigator
Dr. Al-Shabrawey received his MBBCH (M.D.) from medical school at Mansoura University, Egypt in 1988. He then received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences from the same institute in 1994 and 1999 respectively. Dr. Al-Shabrawey continued his education and research training by joining the Vascular Biology Center at Medical College of Georgia first as a predoctoral fellows between 1996-1998, and then as a postdoctoral fellow in 2002. During his fellowship training at MCG, he developed his research interest in studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurovascular injury in retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and age-related macular degeneration. Prior to joining OUWB, Dr. Al-Shabrawey held the position of Professor at Dental and Medical Colleges of Georgia, Augusta University where he directed the craniofacial complex and neuroscience courses and established a strong research portfolio in the area of Vision Sciences and Ophthalmology.
Dr. Al-Shabrawey taught anatomical sciences to medical and dental students for several years with a special focus on the anatomy of craniofacial complex and neuroscience. He also mentored several undergraduate, graduate and medical students as well as postdoctoral fellows throughout his research career.
Dr. Al-Shabrawey also serves as a reviewer to several funding agencies including NIH, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, Diabetes-UK etc., and a reviewer for several journals.
Dr. Al-Shabrawey joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in August of 2021 as a Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies and a Founding Director of the Eye Research Center; He is a Professor in Eye Research Institute, a V. Everett Kinsey Endowed Professor and the director of the Eye Research Institute as well.
Khaled Elmasry, M.D., M.Sc., Ph.D.
Post-Doctoral Fellow
Khaled Elmasry MD, MSc, PhD, is currently working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Eye Research Center/Eye Research Institute, OUWB School of Medicine.
Dr. Elmasry is a graduate of Mansoura Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt. He obtained his PhD from Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, Augusta, GA, USA in Al-Shabrawey’s lab. He is a former Postdoctoral Fellow at Schepen’s Eye Research Institute, Ophthalmology Department, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA in Patricia D’Amore’s lab. He is holding a position of Human Anatomy and Embryology Lecturer in Mansoura Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt.
Dr. Elmasry has an experience in Ophthalmology Research with emphasis on microvascular complications of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. His research is recognized via multiple citations of his peer reviewed publications in prestigious journals of the field such as Diabetologia and Oncotarget. He is currently continuing his interesting research journey via studying the role of Bone morphogenetic proteins in development of neurovascular dysfunction during diabetic retinopathy.
Noureldien Darwish, M.D., Ph.D.
Post-Doctoral Fellow
Dr. Darwish received his M.S and MB.B.CH education from Mansoura University, Egypt, and his Ph.D. education from College of Pharmacy and Health Science, Albany, NY-Medical school, Mansoura University, Egypt, double channel program.
Dr. Darwish has the following experiences:
- Diagnosis of different hematological disorder, leukemia, lymphoma, and targeted therapy approaches.
- Establishing animal models for leukemia, and sickle cell anemia to establish new targeting strategies.
- Cancer cell culture, human embryonic stem cell research, nano-medicine (in vivo and in vitro analysis), angiogenesis, development of animal models for cancer, detection by in vivo imaging in live mice, IVIS and confocal microscopy, molecular studies and flowcytometry
- Genomic instability of cancer and cell cycle – temperature sensitive suspension cancer cell culture, flowcytometry, fluorescence microscopy and FISH analysis
- Cytogenetic studies of genetic disorders and genetic counseling – white blood cell culture and microscopy
Dr. Darwish's present research here at ERI, OUWB is devoted to study the platelet/ endothelium interaction in diabetic retinopathy and to find specific pathways that play an important role in this interaction. He has been involved in the in vitro studies, animal models, and bio-assays required in the proposed studies including flowcytometry, blotting techniques and PCR.

Sonali Sharma, Ph.D. Student
Sonali Sharma completed her Masters of Pharmaceutical Sciences from JSS Academy of Higher Education, Mysuru, Karnataka, India. She has completed Master of Pharmacy (Pharmacology).
Sonali Sharma worked in preclinical lab specifically on rodents. Previously, she worked on depression, ischemic stroke, Alzheimer disease, and gut dysbiosis. She has published few review papers which were on gut dysbiosis, depression and other neurological disorder.
She is skilled in :
Psychopharmacological tests - various mazes such as Forced Swim Test, Tail Suspension Test, Sucrose Preference Test, Splash Test, Morris water maze, radial arm maze, elevated plus maze, Y-maze, open field test, beam walk, stride length.
Surgical techniques - Bilateral carotid artery occlusion in rats to induce stroke, pyloric ligation, Sciatic nerve ligation.
Rodent gross pathology and necropsy - isolation of brain, liver, kidney, spleen, intestine, heart, eye, uterus, ovaries, cervix bone marrow, spinal cord, pituitary, skin, lymph nodes, adrenal glands, pancreas, testis, epididymis, lungs, thymus sciatic nerve, stomach, esophagus).
Isolation of brain regions: hippocampus, cortex, striatum.
Julia Humble, B.Sc. Research Assistant
Julia Humble received a Bachelor of Science degree from Liberty University with a major in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Psychology. She worked as a student researcher in the lab of Dr. Jeong-Ho Kim, where she investigated the cellular mechanisms of glucose metabolism in yeast. At Liberty University, she also worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate genetics and histology labs, where she developed a passion for teaching and laboratory research.
Julia is a research assistant at the Eye Research Institute. Her research primarily focuses on the role of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) in retinal endothelial cells. She investigates the role of BMP signaling in the development of diabetic retinopathy, specifically the breakdown of the blood-retinal-barrier, and neovascularization. Her research utilizes cell lines, mouse models, and human samples, and specializes in the techniques of western blotting, immunofluorescence, and histology.
Maria Ghishan, B.Sc. Research Assistant Technician
Maria Ghishan graduated from Michigan State University with honors in human biology. During her undergraduate years, she had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant for chemistry and biology courses, which ignited her passion for pursuing new knowledge through science and research.
She is currently on a premedical track, and her aspiration is to become an oncologist, where she can combine her passion for research with her commitment to providing compassionate patient care.
Nandini Koneru, B.Sc. Research Assistant
Nandini Koneru received a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University with a major in Human Biology and minors in Global Public Health & Epidemiology and Entrepreneurship & Innovation. She worked as a project manager in a research lab studying family-based weight loss intervention, in addition to working as a patient care technician at Sparrow Hospital.
At the Eye Research Institute, she hopes to explore her interest in ophthalmology research. Her research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy, specifically the role of bone morphogenetic proteins in the breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and neovascularization.
Gieth Alahdab, M.D. Research Assistant
Gieth Alahdab is a medical graduate from Syria.
With a strong foundation in clinical medicine and a growing interest in academic research. He is dedicated to advancing medical knowledge through evidence-based investigation.
Xiao Zhang, M.Sc. Lab Manager
Xiao Zhang received her Master Degree of Science with a major in Biotechnology from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.
She started her job at the Eye Research Institute of Oakland University in 2004 and was involved in both research and administration.
Xiao Zhang is very exited to join Dr. Al-Shabrawey's team and looks forward to new opportunities for growth.
She is the supervisor of ERC/ERI Live Cell Analysis Core as well.
Jonathan Blake
Jonathan Blake attended the University of Utah where he graduated with a major in Kinesiology and a minor in Spanish.
Jonathan is from Salt Lake City, Utah where he grew up for most of his life until he moved to Lima, Peru for the last of his teenage years. He enjoy being physically active and love skiing, rock climbing or just hiking in the mountains
Suhani Gupta
Suhani Gupta graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2019, where she studied Chemistry and Religious Studies. Following graduation, she worked as a medical assistant at a pain clinic, and also conducted clinical research with the SUDDEN project at the UNC School of Medicine for two years.
At the Eye Research Institute, she is excited to explore her interest in ophthalmology to better understand the use of protective agents against traumatic optic neuropathy.
In her free time, Suhani enjoys stargazing, playing lacrosse, and trying out new baking recipes.
Min Young Kim
Min Young Kim graduated from UC Berkeley, where she studied Nutritional Sciences and Education. While at UC Berkeley, she worked as a student researcher in the Wildsoet lab with a focus on the progression of myopia.
During her gap year, Min worked as a preschool teaching assistant and an optometry assistant.
At the Eye Research Institute, she wishes to continue her interest in the eye research field to better understand protective agents against traumatic optic neuropathy.
Min enjoys hiking, finding new boba spots, and cooking in her free time.
Yunjoo Shin
Yunjoo Shin received her B.A. in Neuroscience at Earlham College with Departmental Honors, College Honors, and Phi Beta Kappa. She also received her MPH in Community Health Sciences from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
She is passionate about helping find potential solutions and treatments for eye disorders.

Morgan Carpenter, Senior
Morgan is a senior at Oakland University.
She is majoring in biology and minoring in Spanish language. At Oakland, Morgan serves on the E-Board of the Aspiring Surgeons club, works in research labs specializing in autism and retinal pathophysiology, and she manages the OU men’s club volleyball team.
She also works at Corewell Health as an anesthesia technician and at OUWB as a standardized patient.
In her free time, Morgan enjoys playing volleyball, volunteering at the animal shelter, and cooking.
Jennifer Jaster, Junior
Jennifer is a junior biochemistry student at OU, minoring in nutrition.
At the Eye Research Institute, she hopes to gain valuable research experience and is excited to explore the effect of bioactive lipids among eye disorders.
Jennifer enjoys reading, hiking, and watching movies in her free time.
Michael Binkowski , Junior
Michael Binkowski is a junior at Oakland University.
He is majoring in Clinical and Diagnostic Science with a specialization in Medical Laboratory Science. As an OU Honors College American Red Cross Ambassador, he helps to schedule, promote, and manage blood drives on campus throughout the school year. He also works at Corewell Health as a patient transporter.
Michael hopes to gain valuable skills and knowledge in eye research through working in Dr. Al-Shabrawey's lab."
Enyimpa Nkrumah
Enyimpa Nkrumah is a student at Soka University of America, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a concentration in life sciences. He is originally from Ghana and brings a global perspective to his academic and research journey.
He joined the Al-Shabrawey lab through a summer undergraduate research program sponsored by American Heart Association, where he worked on investigating the role of platelet-endothelial cell interaction in Diabetic Retinopathy. In addition to his academic and research pursuits, he is passionate about healthcare and health equity and hopes to contribute to improving access to healthcare globally.
Outside of the lab, Enyimpa enjoys reading, writing, cooking, and music.
Anusha Reddy, High School Student
Anusha Reddy is accept by MIT in 2024.
She helped analyze the change of Retinal Proteomic data of DR with Noggin and LDN1 treatment when she worked at Dr. Al-Shabrawey's lab as a volunteer.
