In addition to their profound cultural significance, beavers provide critically important ecosystem services, including:
Improving water quality of streams and rivers by trapping sediment and nutrients
Creating a diversity of wetland types that support hundreds of plant and animal species
Creating wildlife habitat for mink, muskrat, river otter, waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds (herons, egrets, cranes), songbirds, amphibians (frogs, salamanders), and reptiles (turtles, snakes), fish, and aquatic invertebrates
Increasing groundwater recharge
Significantly expanding overall wetland acreage, which is important for Oakland County considering it has lost nearly 50% of its historical wetland acreage
Mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon within wetlands and improving hydrology
