August 2021 - Kumeu Flood Response

NZ-RT5 assisted over the week to support our Emergency Response colleagues to help the Kumeu community affected by the flooding.

Taskings included the initial assessment of environment across affected neighborhoods and of damage in zones not yet assessed. Making homes safe and reducing risk and hazards to homes affected to minimize further damage. The Team assisted to return residence back to dry land safely. They also aided community in the area with the cleanup of debris and relay any welfare needs back to Auckland Emergency Management.

June 2021 - Papatoetoe Tornado Response

NZ-RT5 assisted over the weekend to support our Emergency Response colleagues to help the Papatoetoe community affected by the tornado.

Taskings included the initial assessment of environment across affected neighborhoods streets and of damage in zones not yet assessed. Making homes safe and reducing risk and hazards to homes affected to minimize further damage, including working on roofs to secure tarpaulins. Also aided community in the area with the cleanup of debris, cutting down trees with chainsaws, and relay any welfare needs back to Auckland Emergency Management.

May 2021 - Urban Search Exercise

Tuesday nights are reserved for the team to undertake refreshing our theory and practical skills. Recently we ran a search exercise where we put all the various training together into an operation of reconnaissance and search combined with practicing our hand-held radio communications skills.

March 2021 - Flood Response Refresher Rotorua

Flood response trained members from our team, as well as the west Auckland Response Team (NZ-RT3) travelled to Rotorua for a refresher, hosted by Rescue 3 New Zealand. We were joined by Rotorua Emergency Response Team (NZ-RT15), Tauranga Response Team (NZ-RT16), NZ Police, and Fire Emergency NZ. We appreciated the inter team & agency synergy, and worked on our throw-bagging, aggressive/defensive swimming, and wading skills.

February 2021 - Canterbury Earthquake Memorial Service

10 years ago the 6.3 magnitude earthquake stuck the area around Christchurch, resulting in 185 people losing their lives and thousands being injured. Members of our team were deployed to Christchurch to assist with the response. Today, members were again sent down to Christchurch for the memorial service to pay our respects. We remember 22 February 2011.

December 2020 - Appreciation BBQ Dinner

We wrapped up the year with a BBQ and yarn at the Henderson base, joining the West Response Team (NZ-RT3) members and Auckland Emergency Management (AEM). Team members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation from the General Manager of AEM for our deployment supporting the communities during the Covid-19 response.

October 2020 - Rope Responder Training Mt Wellington

Some team members were trained in the Operational Rope Responder course provided by Dan from Rescue 3 New Zealand. We improved and refreshed on our working at heights considerations, appropriate PPE usage, mechanical advantage, abseil and belay skills and gear. Scenario based drills on rope rescue and mechanical advantage hauling of stretches provided us with more practical experience.

April 2020 - Covid-19 Welfare Support Deployment

From the drought emergency to the covid-19 emergency. The Alert Level 4 Lockdown negatively affected a large amount of people, especially from vulnerable communities. A food distribution centre was set up by Auckland Emergency Management and teams of two were deployed to make urgent food package deliveries. We were provided with essential service passes to enable us to undertake the work, as it was a nationally declared emergency. .

February 2020 - Auckland Drought Welfare Support

It was one of the worst drought on record for the Auckland Region. Many communities that relied on rainwater tanks struggled throughout the driest summer. Reports of many weeks of wait list before they could get water tankers to fill up their rainwater tanks, and the network dams were very low with water restrictions imposed. The teams were mobilised by Auckland Emergency Management to manage water supply points across various towns in the region with Māori Wardens to support communities for filling up their 20L water containers.

November 2019 - Response Teams AEM Awards Dinner

Response team members from NZ-RT3 and NZ-RT5 was invited to the Awards Dinner hosted by Auckland Emergency Management. It was an evening of rewards and recognition, with many members presented with Long-Service Awards from Auckland Emergency Management as well as Ministry of Civil Defense, some for more than 25 years of service.

October 2019 - Chainsaw Operation Training

The two day Chainsaw Operation training was provided by Vertical Horizons. First day of the course involved theory around chainsaw components, maintenance, types of cuts, and operating safely including PPE use. The second day brought us down south onto a farm to obtain some practical skills chopping wood, branches and tree logs. Hands on experience was valuable in demonstrating the cross and relieving cuts, as well as how compression and tension creates pinching of the chainsaw.

July 2019 - Storm Response Training

NZ-RT5 hosted Storm Response Training with NZ-RT3. The course included knowledge around working at heights safety, rope and pully use for low angle tasks, anchor setup, belaying, harnesses and many more. While walking on the roof for the exercise, we actually came across a small hole where rain would leak through, so we undertook a quick patch job with duct tape before sending the request formally to the building owner.

February 2019 - Queensland Fruit Fly Biosecurity Response

Bactrocera tryoni - Queensland Fruit fly is an Australian pest affecting fruits which poses a huge threat to our agriculture and economy. This was the largest fruit fly response in Auckland run by Biosecurity New Zealand under the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). After being detected in the suburb of Northcote, a Controlled Area Notice was placed around the area and no fruit could be moved out of the area to prevent any spread. Team members from NZ-RT3 and NZ-RT5 were sent to assist MPI, which included taskings of fruit collection from private properties to be sent for lab investigations. We utilised software similar to building surveys to tag areas searched.
