Curriculum Map
How does the new curriculum work?
Students should:
Take Music Fundamentals (if needed), based on placement exam results.
Take Theory & Practice I & Aural Skills I.
Select one Theory & Practice II course and take the corresponding Aural Skills II course (unless otherwise specified by their program of study).
Select any two Advanced Theory & Practice courses and any two Advanced Aural Skills (unless otherwise specified by their program of study).
When are these courses running?
The current plan is to run the courses on the following schedule, making adjustments as needed.
Both Fall and Spring: Fundamentals, Theory & Practice I, Aural Skills I, Theory & Practice II (both courses), Aural Skills II (both courses), all advanced Theory & Aural courses except those outlined below.
Fall only:
Advanced Theory & Practice: Chromatic Harmony & Form
Advanced Aural Skills: Chromatic Harmony
Spring only:
Advanced Theory: Post-Tonal and Contemporary Music
Advanced Aural Skills: Post Tonal and Extended Chromaticism
How does this compare to the previous model?
This model adds additional courses and de-sequences the second half of the curriculum. Courses from the previous curriculum are still running in the new model, with a few modernizing updates (see the course descriptions) and course title changes. For reference, course numbers for courses prior to Fall '23 are labeled in the model below in pink alongside the new course numbers.
