Program Overview

What is SHARE-CSD?

The Summer Health Academic Research Experience in Communication Sciences and Disorders (SHARE-CSD) is a 6-week summer research experience. We encourage participation by undergraduate students from backgrounds typically underrepresented in STEM and health fields. Program participants will engage in activities in three main areas:

(1) research
(2) academic and career preparation, and
(3) community building and mentoring.

This program is meant to provide students with the skills needed to not only conduct research but also to apply to and succeed in graduate school. Throughout the program, participants will have the potential to engage in research in CSD, career and academic workshops, and have the chance to build a diverse community with their program peers and other undergraduates conducting summer work at NYU.

After the completion of the summer program, students will remain in communication with the program.

Coursework
During the six weeks, participants will receive instruction via mini-courses to obtain background knowledge that will facilitate working in the lab. The mini-courses will help program participants learn more about research areas in CSD and will also help them to choose a lab for their in-depth experience.

Small Group Research Projects
One of the main objectives of the SHARE-CSD is to introduce undergraduates to research methods and opportunities. Groups of 2-4 students will be matched with faculty research mentors to conduct collaborative research projects that are designed by the host lab.

Professional Development Series
We will offer workshops and one-on-one mentoring on academic topics such as how to read and digest a research article, and how to present at a conference, as well as on career preparation topics such as applying to graduate school, finding and applying for scholarships, and writing an Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Structured RCR Training
Students will participate in weekly sessions on Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training to ensure they are prepared to conduct research throughout the summer program and for years to come. Participants will receive roughly 6 hours of responsible research training.

Social Events

The third type of activity will focus on community building, self-reflection, and mentoring. These will include social events and team-building activities for our program participants and connections with undergraduate students participating in similar summer research programs at NYU.

Annual Symposium

The symposium will be attended by current and immediately past program participants, faculty, graduate students, and the external and internal advisory boards. Summer program participants will give oral presentations on their research projects.
