What is Participatory Theater?
It is an active and intentional engaging of the audience before, during, and after the play, where their contributions might help to drive the narrative, or connect it concretely to their own lived experiences. We talk to and with spectators; they become active players.
Is this a recorded play or live performance?
THIS WILL BE A LIVE PERFORMANCE! Actors will be in costumes, they have memorized their lines and have their own set up in terms lighting and props. There will also be some pre-recorded elements - but actors will be engaging with folks in real time!
Why did you make this a participatory play?
The thought behind re-writing the Declaration of Independence is one that it is active involvement! The ensemble invites the audience to play, move, and laugh while examining these questions.
Will there be varying levels of participation?
Our actors will be utilizing many features to provide our audiences with several options and opportunities for engagement. You can opt in and out of every moment.
Here are some of the following features that may be used:
Chat Function (to engage with the artists or follow links)
Participation in polls
Raise Hand function for when actors ask for volunteers to join via video or audio.
How will we know when it's time to engage? I don't want to mess anything up!
The actors will highlight the specific moments where audience members will be invited to engage in the show.
If I do want to participate, will the actors talk me through what to do?
Yes! Our actors will provide detailed instructions and be there every step of the way for audience members who join in the experience.
