This online handbook serves as a guide for doctoral students in the Psychology and Social Intervention (PSI) Program in the Department of Applied Psychology at NYU Steinhardt. This handbook describes all major program milestones and their rationale, procedures, and policies. It documents the expectations for doctoral training and provides information about additional resources that may aid students' professional development, such as relevant professional societies and conferences, dissertation and other funding mechanisms, and exemplar documents.
4 things to note while using this resource:
First, the guidelines and procedures included here represent the most accurate ones to date (January 2025). In the event that you notice discrepancies within the online handbook or between the handbook and your experiences, please let the program director know.
Second, as with many strong and growing programs, PSI is still evolving; therefore, we see this very much as a “living” handbook that may be revised throughout students’ graduate training career. Thus, the information presented here should never be considered a substitute for ongoing communication and collaboration with program faculty.
Third, we lay out guidelines that refer specifically to the principles and procedures of the PSI program. Students are also expected to learn and follow the guidelines, rules, and procedures laid out by the Department of Applied Psychology, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, and New York University.
Finally, and critically, the handbook should not be viewed as a complete list of every action that students need to engage in to be successful in the program. It merely sets forth the content and timelines for required materials. The successful student will go above and beyond these program requirements to secure the unique training and experiences needed to attain their professional goals.
