ProtoShop Rules

Basic ProtoShop Rules

The following safety guidelines must be adhered to so that we can provide a safe and productive environment for members of the ProtoShop community as well as for all others visiting the ProtoShop.

PROTECTIVE GEAR AND CLOTHING:

  • NEVER work in the shop alone.
  • ALWAYS wear safety glasses when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS wear closed-toe shoes when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS wear tight-fitting clothing when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS tie back long and/or loose hair when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS remove ties, hair ornaments and other dangling accessories when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS remove jewelry from wrists and hands (e.g., rings, bracelets and watches) when in or near shop areas.
  • ALWAYS utilize hearing protection to protect against hearing loss that can arise when exposed to sound above 85 decibels.
  • ALWAYS wear gloves if necessary for the safe utilization of a tool or conduct of an activity in the ProtoShop.

USE OF TOOLS AND MACHINES:

ALWAYS undergo and complete training and pass a certification test before using ProtoShop tools and machines (except hand tools and soldering irons), even if you are already experienced in using those tools. Since we do not offer testing for hand tools and soldering irons, please do not use these tools if you are not adept at using them; they can cause serious injury if improperly used.

  • ALWAYS be trained on and comfortable using a tool. If at any time you are unsure of what you are doing, stop IMMEDIATELY and ask for help.
  • ALWAYS use a tool as it is designed to be used and only for its intended purpose.
  • ALWAYS ensure a tool is in good working order before using it. If you begin using a tool and it is somehow unsafe or broken, stop immediately, leave a note on the tool that it is unsafe or broken, and notify protoshop@nyu.edu immediately.
    • NEVER leave tools and machines running unattended.
    • NEVER use the tools and machines only in violation of law or intellectual property rights.
    • ALWAYS alert ProtoShop staff and call 911 immediately in the event of an accident or if someone is hurt.

We reserve the right to deny access to the ProtoShop or require a person to leave the ProtoShop if we consider the circumstances to so require.
