At the computer

To use the lasercutter you should prepare your artwork or cut file using "vector art" software. Examples are Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and Correll Draw. The below instructions are based on Corell Draw. Other software will be similar but might have slight differences.

  1. Create a new file. Size the file to the size of the laser bed With: 24 inches Hight: 12 inches (make sure your units are inches). Set resolution to 300dpi (we find it balances speed and quality nicely. Select "ok"
  2. Create artwork. The lasercutter will use vector settings on lines that are .001 point or "hairline" line wieght. All art that is not a hairline lineweight will be etched using raster settings.

Quickstart Guide

When you have your laser and print driver installed, you are ready to start engraving! To get started quickly and run a sample piece of material on the laser cutter, the following is a quick setup guide outlining the general steps for running a job. A detailed set of instructions for each step of the process can be found in the user manual:

  1. Check that the lasercutter fire extinguisher is at and and that the guage is showing in the green range.
  2. Find a piece of material to engrave (do NOT cut uncoated metals or other problematic materials). This might be wood, anodized aluminum or plastic. Here is a great source for more information (this focuses on a different laser cutter, so some specific size info and settings info may vary).
  3. Turn on your laser, fume extractor, and air boost.
  4. Place your sample material on the table in the upper left corner. Make sure the table is low enough to accommodate the material. If not low enough, press the Focus key, then the down arrow to lower the table before placing your item on the table. Close the door.
  5. In your graphic software, print the file. Select "epilog mini copy1" as your printer.
  6. Click Properties to see the Laser Dashboard.
    1. Set a resolution (300 or 600 DPI usually)
    2. Set a page size to match the page size of the file
    3. Set the speed and power for both raster and vecotor (use the Epilog material guide for a starting point). Set the Frequency for the vector settings.
  7. Click OK to exit the Laser Dashboard and click Print to print the page to your laser.
  8. At the laser, turn on the fume extractor.
  9. Turn on air compressor.
  10. BEFORE loading materials (with the laser bed empty) press the “focus buton” on the laser interface.
    1. Lower bed to fit material
    2. Insert material without hitting the laser head, gantry, or bed
    3. Flip down focus bracket
    4. Use the “up” and “down” arrows to move the bed till the tip of the focusing bracket touches the top of the materials.
  11. Click the left arrow that says "job" below it, the job you sent over will be shown on the LCD display. If it does not, try turning the lasercutter off and back on or unplugging and replugging the USB data cable from the computer.
  12. Press the Go key to run the job.
  13. The job will start running.
